Give Yourself Permission to Purge

Many homeowners tell me they're ready for a change. They're tired of their furniture, frustrated by rooms that feel dated, and no longer excited by the spaces they live in every day. Yet when it comes time to make a change, they hesitate. Not because they don't want something new, but because they feel guilty getting rid of furniture that's still perfectly good.
Here's The Truth
A piece doesn't have to be broken, worn out, or falling apart to have outlived its place in your home.
If it no longer reflects your style, supports the way you live, or brings you joy, it's okay to let it go.
Our homes should evolve as we do. The furniture and décor choices that felt perfect ten or twenty years ago may not represent who you are today. That's completely normal.
Instead of viewing it as wasteful, think of it this way:
You're simply sending that piece on to its next chapter. Someone else may be searching for exactly what you're ready to part with.
How To Do It
Sell it on Facebook Marketplace. Pass it along to one of your kids or other young relative. Donate it to a local charity - many organizations even offer free pickup services, making the process surprisingly easy. A quick online search will often reveal several options in your area.
In fact, passing furnishings along to a new owner is one of the most environmentally responsible things you can do. Reusing existing furniture keeps items out of landfills, reduces demand for new manufacturing, and gives perfectly usable pieces a second life.
That's a win for everyone.
And perhaps the greatest benefit?
Creating space.
Making Room For A Fresh Start
When you remove furnishings and décor that no longer fit your vision, you create room for a fresh start. You make space for pieces that truly reflect your current style, support your lifestyle, and work together cohesively.
The most beautiful homes rarely happen by accident. They are thoughtfully curated collections of furnishings, finishes, colors, textures, and accessories that complement one another and create a seamless experience.
When every piece has a purpose and belongs in the overall design, your home feels calmer, more intentional, and more enjoyable to live in.
So if you've been holding onto furniture simply because it's "still good," consider giving yourself permission to let it go. Someone else may love it. And your future dream home may be waiting for the space it leaves behind.
Your home is your sanctuary. The way it looks and feels should bring you joy every day.
A Quick Note
This doesn't mean you need to get rid of everything. In fact, some of my favorite projects incorporate meaningful family heirlooms, antiques, or special pieces that my clients genuinely love. If a piece brings you joy, holds sentimental value, or tells part of your story, I can absolutely design around it and thoughtfully incorporate it into your overall design plan. The goal isn't to start over from scratch. It's to surround yourself with pieces that have meaning, purpose, and beauty, while letting go of the things that no longer serve you.
