Can AI Design Your Home?

If you’ve used ChatGPT or another AI tool while dreaming about your home, you’re definitely not alone. AI is quickly becoming another source homeowners turn to when planning their spaces, right alongside Pinterest, Houzz and Instagram. And it can be incredibly helpful. But can ChatGPT actually replace an interior designer? The answer depends largely on what you’re trying to accomplish.

Homeowners Are Already Using AI for Design Inspiration

According to 2026 research from Houzz...

22% of renovating homeowners have used AI during their projects

41% of Millennials home renovators have used AI

79% of homeowners using AI rely on general-purpose chatbots, such as ChatGPT

So, most aren’t using specialized interior design software. They’re using AI primarily to explore design ideas, visualize possibilities and research decisions for their homes. In other words, AI is quickly becoming part of the way homeowners gather inspiration and begin thinking about a project.

AI Can Be a Great Starting Point

For homeowners who enjoy researching and exploring ideas, AI can be a useful tool. And as an interior designer, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It can help you explore possibilities and better understand what you’re drawn to. The difficulty begins when inspiration has to become reality.

A Beautiful Picture Isn’t a Design Plan

One of the biggest misconceptions about AI-generated interiors is that if you can create the image, you can create the room. Unfortunately, those are two very different things.

AI can generate a gorgeous kitchen or living room that looks completely believable.

But it doesn’t necessarily understand the realities of your particular home, including dimensions, construction limitations, scale, product availability, budget or the countless details that determine whether a design will actually work. And sometimes the beautiful product or architectural feature in the picture simply doesn’t exist.

AI can help you imagine what your home could become. Turning that vision into a design that can actually be built, sourced and installed is another matter.

The Challenge Isn’t Finding More Options

There have never been more design options available to homeowners. Now AI can generate even more possibilities. But more options don’t necessarily make designing a home easier. Often, they make decisions harder.

The real challenge is knowing which decisions are right for your home and making sure hundreds of individual choices ultimately work together. That’s where professional design becomes less about providing ideas and more about providing judgment and curation.

AI Can Give You Options. A Designer Gives You Direction.

When I design a home, my goal isn’t to show my clients everything they could do. It’s to narrow thousands of possibilities into the few choices that make the most sense for their home, lifestyle, architecture and investment level. And every decision is made in context with the others. That’s the difference between selecting a collection of attractive things and creating a home that feels intentional, cohesive and beautifully finished.

Then There’s the Part Nobody Sees on Instagram

Selecting everything is only part of a professionally designed project. Someone still has to bring it all together.

For a remodel, that includes communicating the design intent, coordinating selections and resolving the countless details that arise as a project moves toward construction.

For furnishings, it means sourcing, ordering, tracking, receiving & inspecting, resolving issues, delivery & installation, and finally styling everything so the space feels complete.

Full-service interior design isn’t simply paying someone to have ideas. You’re investing in the expertise and execution required to turn those ideas into a finished home.

So, Can You DIY Your Interior Design With ChatGPT?

For smaller projects, absolutely. AI can be a helpful resource for homeowners who enjoy doing the research, shopping and decision-making themselves.

But when you’re remodeling significant spaces, furnishing multiple rooms or making substantial investments in your home, the stakes become much higher. Mistakes become expensive. And the amount of time required to research, compare, coordinate and manage everything can become overwhelming very quickly.

That’s usually when the question changes from:

“Could I do this myself?” to: “Do I actually want to?”

The Future Is Not AI or Interior Designers

I believe the most interesting future is AI and interior designers.

Designers are using technology too. In my own design process at 615interiors, I use detailed space planning and immersive 3D visualization to help my clients understand where we’re headed before they make major remodeling or furnishing investments.

Technology can make the design process clearer and more collaborative. But technology doesn’t replace knowing the client, understanding the home, making judgment calls, coordinating the details or standing behind the finished result. Those are human responsibilities. And they’re a large part of what makes full-service design valuable.

The human responsibilities of full service interior design is a large part of what makes it so valuable.
