6 Tips for Your Kitchen Design

When designing or remodeling a kitchen, it's easy to get caught up in colors, finishes, and cabinetry styles—but the layout and function are where the real magic happens. A poorly planned kitchen can frustrate you daily, while a thoughtfully designed one can make cooking, cleaning, and gathering a joy. Here are six kitchen design tips to ensure a space that looks beautiful and works beautifully, too.
1. Allow 4 Feet Between Island and Perimeter Cabinets
One of the most common layout mistakes is placing an island too close to surrounding cabinetry. You need at least 42–48 inches of clearance between the island and other countertops or appliances. Less than that, and the space becomes tight and uncomfortable, especially when multiple people are in the kitchen. Give yourself room to move!
2. Put the Refrigerator on the End of Your Workspace
While it might seem logical to center your refrigerator for symmetry, it can actually disrupt the workflow. The refrigerator is accessed frequently by everyone—not just the cook—so placing it at the end of a cabinetry run helps keep traffic out of your prep zone and makes the kitchen more functional for the whole family.
3. Use Proper Ventilation
Good ventilation is more than a luxury—it’s essential. Whether it’s a sleek stainless steel vent hood or a custom decorative one, make sure it vents to the outside. Recirculating fans just don’t cut it. Proper ventilation improves air quality, removes cooking odors, and helps prevent grease buildup on your walls and cabinets.
4. Place the Sink below a Window (or Good Lighting)
If possible, place your sink under a window. Natural light makes cleanup easier and helps you spot grime or food residue. If a window isn't an option, make sure to install focused lighting—like a pendant or sconce—above the sink area to keep it well-lit and functional.
5. Remember Task Lighting
Relying solely on overhead lighting can leave work areas in shadow. Under-cabinet lighting is a must for brightening countertops where most of your food prep happens. It’s an easy upgrade that makes a huge difference in both function and ambiance.
6. Good Trash and Recycling Setup
One often-overlooked element is where your trash and recycling will live. Don’t leave them as an afterthought. Plan for built-in pull-out bins close to your prep area and dishwasher. It keeps things tidy, sanitary, and easily accessible during cooking and cleanup.
